The precious concrete volume that completes the Val d'Arve school complex in Carouge conceals in itself much more than an exercise in style linked to this noble material. Indeed, its precise location on the edge of the Veyrier road subtly marks the end of the traditional continuous city, to give way to the development of the more "fragmented" periphery, here formalised by the Fontenette project. In this context, the slight modification of the ground - a few steps, a low wall - and the installation of the two entrances confirm a basic principle that combines the notion of extending an existing school with the consideration of a specific urban fact. The definition of a modest but very heterogeneous programme - a company apartment, special rooms, a multi-purpose aula and a sports hall - enabled the architect to highlight the emergence of a small object. This was made possible by the underground installation of the large ping-pong room, skilfully combining this "disappearance" with the "covered" link required by the project owner. The two programmatic routes are rolled up one on top of the other by means of a staircase placed in a corner. The design of the formwork in small vertical planks is controlled as well as the breaking of the volume by horizontal bands which make it possible to attenuate the dimension of a last more important level due to the presence of the aula. The large anodized aluminum windows bring life to the facade and enrich the lighting inside the school. Philippe Meier
